Arne Johan Nilsen, author and historian, will be giving a lecture at the Ishavsmuseet on Friday, February 20. Nilsen's lecture will be about one of the least known actions carried out by the working class, but also about historical whaling and whaling as it is conducted today. We will also hear the story of Helle, who is currently engaged in whaling.

For the first polar evening of the year at the Ishavsmuseet on January 23, the Ishavsmuseet will be visited by Kenneth Staurset Fåne, who will talk about the Ellsworth expeditions in Antarctica.

The political game about Svalbard

On Friday, November 21st at 7:00 PM, Svalbard veteran Birger Amundsen will come to the Ishavsmuseet to give a lecture about the political game over Svalbard.

New Polar Evening at the Ishavsmuseet:

Seal hunting in the Austisen. On October 10th at 7:00 PM, the Ishavsmuseet will be visited by Øistein Jakobsen, who will mainly talk about seal hunting in the Austisen.
In the lecture we will go back to the 1980s. We will be with the icebreaker with the call sign LDQJ – M/S “Norsel” in the Austisen, and experience life on board. We will be told about the crossing, the first ice, life in the mess and on deck.

New Polar Evening at the Ishavsmuseet, the glasnost period in Svalbard.
Svalbard and the glasnost period are the theme at Ishavsmuseet Aarvak during the polar evening on September 12th.
Tor Ole Ree (63) from Verdal was a journalist and editor at Svalbardposten when glasnost swept optimistically across the Arctic archipelago, which is visiting the Ishavsmuseet this day.

Friday, March 14th at 6:00 PM, we are ready for a new polar evening at the Ishavsmuseet. This time with two exciting new events, book launch and exhibition opening.
The Ishavsmuseet has renovated the fourth floor and invites you to the grand opening today.

Harald Dag Jølle will come to the Ishavsmuseet with a lecture on Friday, February 14th at 7:00 PM.

Harald Dag Jølle has followed in the ski tracks of many old polar heroes to the South Pole, through the Northwest Passage, to the northern tip of Greenland – and in 2022 he traveled with Crown Prince Haakon across the Greenland Ice Sheet on a fantastic educational expedition across Greenland to experience, see and better understand climate research and Norwegian polar history.

On Friday, January 31 and Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM, Ishavsmuseet invites children aged 10 to 12 (born in 2013-2015) to join in exploring the museum with various activities.

For the first polar evening of the fall, Friday, October 11th at 7:00 PM (new date from first announced), the Ishavsmuseet will be visited by Robert Hermansen, who will primarily talk about the time in Store Norske Spitsbergen Kullkompani (SNSK).

Friday, January 26th at 7:00 PM, a new season of polar evenings at the Ishavsmuseet starts, and this time Johannes Bjarne Alme is back with a new exciting drama. Alme deals with the dramatic story of the sinking of the Arctic ship "Herøyfjord" west of Runde in 1949. "Herøyfjord" also brought the crew of "Polarbjørn" home from the ice.

Friday, December 8th at 7:00 PM, the Ishavsmuseet Friends' Association invites you to a Christmas party at the Ishavsmuseet. The Friends' Association is 25 years old this year and is celebrating itself with an open party for everyone who wants to join, both members and non-members.

Friday 13 October at 7:00 PM it is time for a new polar evening at Ishavsmuseet Aarvak in Brandal. This time the museum will be visited by Tore W. Topp. He will present his new book and tell about Schjelderup Seal Hunting – a story of risk and courage. After the lecture there will be a dinner with seal steak.

Exploration of Northwestern Greenland
Far up to the north and surrounded by enormous masses of ice lies Nordaust-Grønland. Today the world's largest national park, and apart from the crew of the Sirius Sled Patrol and a couple of weather stations, this area is empty of people. But in the early 1900th century, Nordaust-Grønland was home to Danish and Norwegian trappers, who, many miles from their nearest neighbor, settled on the coast to hunt foxes and polar bears for saddle in Europe.

It is women who are in focus when the Ishavsmuseet invites you to this year's first Polar Evening on Friday, February 24th at 7:00 PM, and it is Anka Ryall who will tell us about the polar women.
