"A Life in the Ice" Polar Evening with Jan Ove Ekeberg October 10th at 7:00 PM
The theme of the polar evening this time is polar chef Adolf Henrik Lindstrøm.
Author and journalist Jan Ove Ekeberg is the speaker at the Ishavsmuseet this evening. Ekeberg has a great interest in the polar regions, and has written an excellent book about polar chef Lindstrøm.
Jan Ove Ekeberg has 30 years of experience as a journalist from several newspapers, NRK and TV 2. He has a master's degree in political science from the USA. He now leads the economic news on TV 2 Nyheitskanalen. He is also a skilled lecturer. Jan Ove Ekeberg debuted as an author with the biography of Gro Harlem Brundtland in 1996. In total, he has written, or co-authored, five biographies, a Norwegian book, two fiction novels and three musicals.
Adolf Henrik Lindstrom
"He has rendered greater and more valuable services to the Norwegian polar expeditions than any other man." Roald Amundsen wrote about Adolf Henrik Lindstrøm during his stay at Framheim, the last outpost before the conquest of the South Pole in 1911.
Adolf Henrik Lindstrøm (1866-1939) is the Norwegian with the longest experience in the Arctic and Antarctic. He participated in all the great, classic polar expeditions with Nansen, Amundsen and Sverdrup. He was also the first to sail around the entire American continent.
Lindstrøm was an excellent chef. His "Steak à la Lindstrøm" is still on many menus, and in the years around the First World War was served at all the Grand hotels in Northern Europe. In addition, Lindstrøm collected stones, pressed flowers and prepared skins for the leading natural scientists of his time. And he was an experienced sailor, a good hunter, skier and dog sledder.
With his human warmth and simple everyday psychology, he created a homely atmosphere in the most windswept places on earth. Even the great national heroes came to him with their sorrows and worries. Lindstrøm's indefatigable spirit through months and years of freezing cold, darkness and isolation made him very valuable out in the icy wastes.
As usual, the polar evening will end with dinner for those who wish. This time, of course, "Steak à la Lindstrøm" is on the menu. Registration for food is required.
