"Catch Shipwreck Ban"
"Catch Shipwreck Ban"
Friday, March 14th at 6:00 PM, we are ready for a new polar evening at the Ishavsmuseet. This time with two exciting new events, book launch and exhibition opening.
The Ishavsmuseet has renovated the fourth floor and invites you to the grand opening today.
The new exhibition deals with Norwegian seal hunting and the role of the company GC Rieber in the hunt. GC Rieber was itself the hub of Norwegian seal hunting throughout the 1900th century and sailed and co-owned many ships, both in Sunnmøre and in Troms.
The company was also a purchaser and processor of Arctic products, through its fur processing plant, leather factory and shoe production.
When the demonstrations against sealing were at their peak, it was Christian Rieber who alone took the biggest blow for the entire industry, receiving more than 250.000 protest letters and cards. For periods, both he and the company had police protection after threats and rumors of attacks. This story is an important part of the exhibition, which also shows the company's transition from sealing to expedition ships.
As part of this large project, author Johannes Bjarne Alme has written a book about Norwegian seal hunting history and GC Rieber. "Fishing Shipwrecks Ban – Norwegian Seal Hunting and GC Rieber in Ups and Downs". The book will be launched at the Ishavsmuseet this evening.
"Fangst Forlis Forbod" is a non-fiction book about the rise and fall of the proud sealing industry – from the ice floes in the Arctic Ocean via the catwalk in Paris to street riots in the EU. The author takes the reader into the heart of this industry and documents how important it has been for the development along the coast and the creation of value in Norway. The book is 300 pages long and illustrated with more than 300 pictures.
After the book launch and exhibition opening, a two-course dinner will be served in the museum café, this time it will be seal steak with good accompaniments followed by Crème brûlée and coffee.
