Polar evening with book presentation, lecture, book herring and milk soup at Ishavsmuseet

Friday, April 28 at 7:00 PM, it's time for another polar evening at the Ishavsmuseet. This time, Rolf Hanoa will be visiting the Ishavsmuseet with a book presentation and the lecture "Kings Bay 1916-2016. From mining to research base."

In 2016 it was 100 years since Peter S. Brandal was offered the rights to the Kings Bay coalfield. In the early summer of 1916 he sent his two ships "Signalhorn" and "Polaris" on an expedition to investigate the field more closely. They returned to Brandal in early September with 300 tons of prime coal. Peter S. Brandal had the rights transferred to him in September 1916 for NOK 250.000. Later that same year he entered into a partnership with Trygve Klausen, Michael Knutsen and Trygve Jervell to form Kings Bay Kull Comp. A/S

Rolf Hanoa will draw history to Kings Bay through these 100 years. Hanoa wrote for the 100th anniversary a prominent book about Kings Bay through these first 100 years. This is the book Rolf Hanoa will present this evening. It will of course be possible to buy a signed book after the lecture.

Rolf Hanoa has over the years held positions and assignments as a doctor in Svalbard. He started in Kings Bay in 1986, and then spent many summer seasons there. He is a consultant at the Department of Neurosurgery, Oslo University Hospital, and professor of occupational medicine at the University of Bergen. Hanoa has conducted several studies of the miners' working environment, including Spitsbergen boot-to-mouth disease, the firefighting work during the fire in mine 7 in Longyearbyen in 1988, and the explosion accident in Kings Bay in 1962.

After the lecture, refreshments will be served. herring and milk soup according to a good old recipe in the museum café. Registration at noon
