Polar evening about Ludolf Schjelderup
Friday 13 October at 7:00 PM it is time for a new polar evening at Ishavsmuseet Aarvak in Brandal. This time the museum will be visited by Tore W. Topp. He will present his new book and tell about Schjelderup Seal Hunting – a story of risk and courage. After the lecture there will be a dinner with seal steak.
The book is a fascinating story about the famous shipping company from the small trading town of Skånland just outside Bodø. This is the story of the polar ships "Quest" and "Polarquest" and the legendary Arctic skipper and polar giant Ludolf Schjelderup and his crew.
The author Tore W. Topp is the son-in-law of Ludolf Schjelderup. In the book he takes us on fantastic adventures from many dramatic and exciting expeditions in the Arctic. Seal hunting, walrus hunting, dramatic shipwrecks, and heroic salvage operations are some of the ingredients.
Among other things, Schjelderup was involved in the rescue operation in 1928 when the Italian Umberto Nobile's airship "Italia" made an emergency landing on the ice north of Svalbard on its way back from the North Pole. Nobile was saved, but Roald Amundsen, who also took part in the search, disappeared.
Author Tore W. Topp also talks about his own historical expeditions in the wake of Schjelderup and his crew. During the lecture, he will tell about his four attempts to land on Kvitøya.
Tore W. Topp is a trained engineer and economist and has had a long career with medical positions and board positions in the business world. Today he works as a consultant in his own company in addition to his work on the historic polar expeditions.
After Topp's lecture, dinner will be served in the museum in the usual style, and this time seal steak wrapped in bacon is on the menu. Buy your ticket here
