"Polarstar" sets off on new adventures: – Sail-off party at the Ishavsmuseet on Friday, June 14 at 7:00 PM.

After this Grand Old Lady of the Arctic Ocean underwent an extensive restoration in Poland, the ship is now ready for operation again. On Saturday morning, it will sail north on new adventures.

But before we can let her sail, we have to have a farewell party according to old tradition. Ishavsmuseet invites you to a farewell party on Friday, June 14th with seal steak and flute potatoes on the menu. A good dessert is also included. Here we will also hear more about what the ship will do in the coming years. There will probably be no seal hunting, but there will be many exciting trips. Lux & Lano visit us with an excerpt from their popular theater performance in which "Polarstar" had one of the roles. No farewell party without an accordion, and Knut Selvåg will play for us throughout the evening.

After several rounds, the shipowner has come to the conclusion that the most sensible use of the ship for a period to come will be tourism, preferably expedition tourism. Mats Forsberg and Ivar Haugen will now take her to Tromsø, which will be the starting point for this venture. This will also be in close collaboration with the Ishavsmuseet Aarvak, where together we will develop the ship to be a living documentation center for Norwegian polar fishing and history. The Ishavsmuseet will thus reach even further with its dissemination.

With around 50 seal hunting trips and a number of other exciting missions in the northern regions, there was no shortage of dramatic episodes in rough seas and ice. Nevertheless, it was the first part of the 2000s that was most frightening when the "Polarstar" was saved from scrapping twice. The first time by Lars and Bjarne Brandal. The "Polarstar" was worn out when Willy Nesset took over the ship and saved it from scrapping in 2008. In 2013, the "Polarstar" will go to Poland for restoration in close cooperation with the Norwegian Agency for Cultural Heritage, by VS Poland and Marine Constructions, Szczecin, their facilities.

  1. On August 2017, the ship returned home to Brandal for a public festival with nearly 2000 people applauding the ship and rowing it to the dock.

"Polarstar" is a jewel that will remind us for generations to come of the great and dramatic Arctic history that has had such great significance for our country.

On Saturday afternoon, it sets sail for new adventures and you are welcome to be on the quay to watch it depart.

Register at the museum if you want to participate in the farewell party on Friday. Ticket for food and entertainment is NOK 300,-
