The history of Ny-Ålesund is both fascinating and dramatic. On several occasions over the past 100 years, the whole world has had its eyes on news from this world's northernmost city.

The English whaler Jonas Poole was able to report large deposits of coal on the south side of Kongsfjorden as early as 1610. Several whalers and expeditions took advantage of bunkering coal in Kongsfjorden when they were in the area, but it would be more than 300 years before anyone successfully started a coal mine here.

It was the enterprising Sunnmøren Peter S. Brandal, Michael Knutsen, Trygve Jervell and Trygve Klausen who on December 14, 1916 formed the company Kings Bay Kul Comp. A/S.
