Eight small Arctic ships going out to hunt seals are fighting for their lives on the crossing to the Newfoundland field. The three Brandals ships set course for the Faroe Islands, the coal-fired "Arktos" wanted to bunker down on extra coal.

There was a storm in the Atlantic, but after four days with no improvement in the reports, they decided to move on. They couldn't lie there and risk the young seal catch being ruined if they were too late.

The barometer drops sharply

All five Nordland ships were scheduled to sail a route north of Iceland. But about a day's sailing from Iceland, "Isfjell" reported a leak, they wanted to go around Iceland to repair. "Nyken" and "Saltdalingen" wanted to assist in getting ashore. "Quest" and "Selis" continued north of Iceland. The sea had been a bit "rough" on the voyage to Iceland, and the three ships had the opportunity to repair some minor damage. They now decided to go out south of Iceland, together with the three Brandal ships. The weather was fine, but the barometer dropped sharply. The next day, an enormous sea with dangerous swells was reported. The sail was taken down and the log was kept in. "Nyken" suffered damage to the fishing boats and wheelhouse. The wheelhouse was braced with whalebone, but reported over the radio that they were now quite well.
