Moscow, May 6, 1926. The Soviet Union adopted a new policy for sovereignty over Arctic territories. This policy implies Soviet sovereignty over Franz Josef Land. It challenges important Norwegian commercial interests as well as the Norwegian view of the international legal practice of annexing unclaimed land.
Norway is put on high alert. The Soviet Union's demands for sovereignty were to be met with action. An occupation of Victoria Island was to be the key to an advance against Franz Josef Land. At the center of these events stand two key scientists: Adolf Hoel and Gunnar Horn.
This is the dramatic backdrop when author Svend Otto Remøe comes to the Ishavsmuseet on Friday, April 24, to present his new book.
Ice Age – The Battle for the Arctic is a dramatic tale of a little-known side of Norwegian “Arctic imperialism.” At the same time, it provides insight into the relationship between the two countries and the increasing importance of Arctic relations in the interwar period.
Svend Otto is the grandson of the famous Arctic sea captain Sigvald Remøy. Svend Otto himself lives in Hamar, but visited his grandfather every summer out on Remøya. Here he heard many a story from the seal hunt that left its mark.
Svend Otto Remøe has previously published Fanget i polarisen (2018) and continues with this story about the border disputes in the north with Norway's neighbor to the east.
