THE ARCTIC OCEAN SHEARS ON CANVAS!

Wednesday 14 March is the premiere of the documentary film The Arctic Circle at the Ishavsmuseet Aarvak.

For the first time on film, the women who waited at home while their men were out fishing in the Arctic Ocean tell their story.

The documentary will be shown at Ishavsmuseet Aarvak in Brandal on Wednesday, March 14th at 19:00 PM. The directors and two of the cast will be present, and after the screening it will be possible to purchase the film on DVD.

The film lasts 27 minutes.

The Ice Crossing is about Marit Lillenes Voldnes (83) from Tjørvåg, Svanhild Warholm (91) from Moltustranda and Kjellaug Ødegaard (82) from Hjørungavåg. They were all married to sealers in Sunnmøre.

At Easter 1952, one of the biggest disasters in Norwegian maritime history occurred, when five Arctic ships with 78 men disappeared without a trace during a hurricane in the Vestisen. The women had no contact with the men from the time the ships left the dock until they returned several months later. If they then came back.

Through interviews and unique archive footage and images, the film takes us back to a harsh Norwegian reality that few can see happening today.

This April marks the 60th anniversary of the sinking. The women in the film are among the very few survivors who had their husbands in the Arctic Ocean that year, making them unique witnesses of the time.
