Polar Evening Friday 12 September at 7:00 PMGunnar Myklebust "The Arctic Ocean, Fur Hunting and Daring"
Gunnar Myklebust is the first man out in a new round of polar evenings at the Ishavsmuseuten this autumn. This polar evening is also the book launch from Samlaget with Myklebust's brand new book, Ishavet. Fur trapping and daring.
Gunnar Myklebust is a journalist and author. He has worked as a foreign affairs officer for NRK, and was NRK's correspondent in the United States from 1993 to 1997.
He has previously written the book The Heavy Water Saboteur about Joachim Rønneberg.
The Arctic Ocean has had an irresistible attraction for Norwegians for centuries. A cold and powerful wilderness that, with its overwhelming splendor and merciless nature, has lured generations of adventurers and trappers. Willing to challenge the unknown for a chance to survive. Or just to experience it. In flimsy craft or primitive winter huts, Norwegian trappers risked their lives for the dream of the great warp. The history of the Arctic Ocean is full of dramatic stories about those who wanted and dared, about curious adventurers and incredible daring. About those who succeeded and came home, some who only came home – and many who were left out there.
In the book, Gunnar Myklebust guides us through several hundred years of Norwegian seal hunting history, from the hunters in the Middle Ages to the international campaign that broke up Norwegian seal hunting.
During his lecture in Brandal next Friday, he will tell stories from the book and show some of the many beautiful images from the book. Brandal and Sunnmøre are well represented in the book, which should be of great interest in our area, and find its way onto many bookshelves this fall.
Editor at Samlaget, Bente Riise, also participated in the launch.
There will be ample opportunity to buy the book after the lecture, which starts at 7:00 PM, at the Ishavsmuseet on Friday. And in the usual style, the museum is offering a delicious dinner after the lecture. This evening there is a baccalao buffet with white and red bacalao and homemade focaccia bread on the menu. Register at the Ishavsmuseet for dinner reservations.
