Polar evening at the Ishavsmuseet on November 10th
Shetland, a community we have a lot in common with.
On Friday, November 10th at 7:00 PM, there will be a polar evening with a lecture about Shetland at the Ishavsmuseet in Brandal, where you will hear about Shetland today and the history of this island community that was once part of Norway.
This evening, the Ishavsmuseet will be visited by Karin Flatøy Svarstad from the Summer Academy, who will be joining the Vesterled team with Kristin Prestvold. Kristin is an archaeologist and works full-time in Trøndelag County Council with cultural heritage as her field of expertise. Kristin is the author of the book "Oppdag Vesterled" which has just been published in a new edition. The book is about historical relics, many of which are connected to Norway in Shetland, the Orkney Islands and parts of mainland Scotland.
The Summer Academy is an organization whose purpose is to drive regional development based on activities and projects within: art, culture, crafts, history and nature, in the form of courses, seminars, exhibitions, professional conferences and themed tours in Vesterled. The area for themed tours is the communities around the North Atlantic and Western Norway. This autumn the theme is Iceland and Shetland. The tour has now come to Shetland. Presentation of an island community in Vesterled with which we have a lot in common.
The Summer Academy celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and has now established itself in Sunnmøre. The move from Kalvåg in Sogn og Fjordane has now been completed. The new base is on the island of Voksa in Sande municipality in the Voksa Cultural Center.
Karin Flatøy Svarstad is the director of the Summer Academy. She has traveled in Vesterled for more than 20 years. She has taught extensively in the North Atlantic, and is involved in several international projects in Vesterled. She thus has good knowledge of the societies that once belonged to Norway and which are part of our recent history.
Karin grew up in Voksa and is interested in people learning about the Summer Academy and the activities there. It is important that activities take place that give people insight and information about Vesterled. Trips are arranged to Shetland, Orkney, Outer Hebrides, Isle of Man, Iceland and the Faroe Islands, this is to maintain contact with our historical heritage and the people who live in the small communities in Vesterled.
Kristin has been with the Summer Academy as a historical guide in Vesterled for several years. She is passionate about communicating history and is currently working on a new book about Vesterled.
This evening at the Ishavsmuseet, the two ladies will contribute to a pleasant evening, where they will take the audience on a journey to Shetland where they will hear about the people, the history, what people do for a living, what they work with, and what it is like on these islands not far from us.
After the lecture, Kristin Prestvold will sign and sell the book "Oppdag Vesterled", and Karin Flatøy Svarstad will present a mini exhibition showcasing textile crafts from Shetland.
In the usual style, dinner will be served after the lecture, and this time deer stew is on the menu. Lecture ticket NOK 125,- Lecture and dinner NOK 300,- Registration at the museum for dinner, tel. 95117644 or buy tickets here: https://www.ishavsmuseet.no/produkter/arrangement/
