Polar evening with polar bear researcher Thor Larsen
Thor S. Larsen is a biologist and has worked internationally on environmental and natural resource management. He is particularly known for his work with polar bears and was a driving force behind the signing of the Polar Bear Agreement in 1973. For several years, the Polarstar was the expedition vessel for Larsen's research trips.
Larsen studied at the University of Oslo, where he received a cand.real in 1966. After this, he continued his studies at the University of Minnesota in the USA. In 1985, Larsen became a dr.philos. at the University of Oslo. In 1972, he started at the Norwegian Polar Institute, where he was head of the biology department until 1985. After working at Norconsult, he was from 1985 to 1988 a senior lecturer at the Institute for International Environmental and Development Studies – Noragric. Larsen later became a professor II at Noragric. He then worked for Norad in Zambia until 1990, when he returned to the Norwegian Polar Institute as research director. In 1991, he became a special advisor at Norad, before in 1995 he became head of the center for international environmental and development studies at the Norwegian University of Agricultural Sciences. From 2001 he was a researcher at UMB and an advisor to UNEP/GRID-Arendal.
Larsen has researched animal populations in polar regions as well as in tropical regions. He began studying polar bears in Svalbard in the mid-1960s. In his international work, Larsen has been particularly concerned with the management of the environment and natural resources.
Thor Larsen comes to the Ishavsmuseet to tell more about his work as a polar bear researcher, with an emphasis on the trips with the "Polarstar". And as Thor says: "The trips with the Signalhorn with Bjarte Brandal as skipper are also unforgettable."
