WELCOME TO THE BRANDAL CONFERENCE 2012

A Sunnmøre ideas conference for the sealing industry

Ishavsmuseet Aarvak October 25th and 26th

The large populations of seals are an underutilized resource; of the quota of 25,000 adult animals, only 4 percent of the quota was caught this year.

The Brandal Conference will primarily focus on the potential for innovative thinking within the field of capture, product development and further processing based on seals as raw materials. At the same time, the increase in the seal population is a threat to other industries such as fisheries and aquaculture. The conference will therefore look at both opportunities and challenges related to sustainable and international management of seal populations.

The Arctic ships have been an important part of the maritime cluster in Sunnmøre, where up to 50 ships were equipped, all of which were native to our region. We have had reception facilities on land for many years, and we still have facilities for skin and oil production. The Brandal conference will therefore aim to and highlight the potential for sustainable taxation of the large populations of harp seals to once again be a small part of this cluster.

The conference is organized at the initiative of Ishavsmuseet Aarvak, the dissemination and documentation center in Brandal, and Polargodt AS in Tjørvåg. Ishavsmuseet in Brandal includes, among other things, the country's largest experience center for sealing. The association Ishavsmuseets Venner has over 600 members with unique interest and expertise in the sealing industry. Polargodt AS has been engaged in product development and production of seal products since 1998. They are best known for the brand Polarolje, and also have several other products within dietary supplements for humans and animals.

To register, contact Ishavsmuseet Aarvak before October 19th.
