Friends of the Ishavsmuseet
Especially after the Ishavsmuseet moved into new and larger premises on 1 June 1998, the need for a friends association became greater. Founder and then director Henrik Landmark at the Ishavsmuseet challenged an old friend, Bjarne Brandal, to look into this.
Bjarne Brandal took the challenge head on, and shortly afterwards founded the Ishavsmuseet Venerables Association on 10 October 1998, with himself as chairman, and with him he had 4 board members. The association was intended to be a support association for the museum, which could help with tasks of both a practical nature, and with other activities that could be of benefit to the museum.
The association produced its own flyer with information about the museum. The association also produced its own orchestra for the museum. In addition, the association was used for various practical purposes, events and volunteer work. Today, the association has over 600 members, and is led by Stian Runne Brandal.
The Flygebladet has become "Isflaket", a journal for polar history, which is published four times a year. Johannes Alme was the first editor, and produced a magazine that has now become one of the country's largest on polar history, he was replaced by Andreas Ringstad in the editor's chair. Finn Sindre Eliassen was the editor for several years, and now museum director Webjørn Landmark is the longest-serving editor of the magazine.

The Friends of the Arctic Museum help the museum with some practical tasks at the museum facility, on a volunteer basis. We also have our own events at the museum, where the purpose is to generate positive buzz, as well as to support the museum financially.
The Friends' Association's main goal is to be a support association for the museum in the broadest sense of the word, in close cooperation with the management and board of the museum. All surpluses in the association are transferred to the museum upon request, and over the past 25 years, the Friends of the Arctic Museum have supported many important expansions and maintenance of the museum with several hundred thousand kroner. The newsletter Isflaket has become Norway's largest magazine for polar history and is still published four times a year. As a member of the Friends of the Arctic Museum, you will receive the magazine free of charge.
