Marit Karlsen Brandal and Steinulf Smith-Meyer wintered in an old cabin at Gråhuken in the north of Svalbard in 1982/83. They brought with them their dog Rabben and a year's worth of equipment.
In the dark, the couple hunted foxes in the traditional way, and most of the time had polar bears nearby. In the bright season they hunt seals for matauk and prepare seal skins as the Eskimos do.
Many visitors came to the cabin during the summer, both by boat and helicopter. The book also describes many cabins they visited in Wijdefjorden and Woodfjorden, in addition to experiences from the area 20 years later, when Marit and Steinulf were at Gråhuken with their three children.
