Strong women who, despite a hard fight for their lives, who were both mocked and harassed, refused and allowed themselves to be subdued. They met in associations for edification and fellowship, held bazaars and raised money to help women on the other side of the globe, who had it even worse. The book also follows those who turned their backs on poverty and had exciting lives in Africa, America, and even in the Tsar's palace in Russia.
