Skjerdal was the chairman of the board of the Kings Bay Coal Company in Svalbard and was fiercely attacked after the explosion accident in 1962. After 17 years of continuous rule, the Labour Party government was overthrown. Lyng's bourgeois government seemed to open up government alternatives other than the Labour Party.
