When Shackleton's dream became reality
Antarctica is one of the coldest and most desolate places on Earth. An icy wasteland where much of the continent is still uncharted territory. What is it that still draws people there? The South Pole is also enchanting and beautiful, where women and men travel to challenge the elements.
Over 100 years ago, Ernest Shackleton attempted to cross the continent from sea to sea, via the South Pole. It was not until 1957/58 that an expedition completed the journey many thought impossible. This book shows in words and pictures how technological innovations and raw muscle power made Shackleton's dream come true. One of the participants was Mt Everest veteran George Lowe, and he documented it all with his camera. In Over the South Pole, there are a number of previously unpublished photographs – dramatic landscapes, sharp portraits and action shots that describe this first crossing of Antarctica – one of the greatest triumphs of the 20th century.
