Additional information

Used during the evacuation of Finnmark in 1944.

"Poland" ex "Rolf".

"Rolf" was built of wood at Myre in Rosendal in 1894. The new building was 53,7 feet long, 16,7 feet wide and 6,4 deep.

It was Kolbein Kvitnes, Brandal, who had this ship built. Kolbein, along with many others from Hareid, had owned the boat "Nordeggen" which had been built in Ålesund in 1879. The operation was not going well and "Nordeggen" was soon sold to Emil Rasmussen in Ålesund. Kolbein worked his way up and had his own boat "Rolf" built in 1894. He received a loan for the new building from the Norwegian Sea Fishing Fund. Kolbein used this boat for bank fishing.

In 1905 the boat was built up at a height, and after this he started to sail the Arctic Ocean as a sailing ship from 1906. Around the turn of the year 1912/13 it was fitted with a Grei engine, and "Rolf" was now renamed "Polen". At this time it was Kolbein and his son Johan K. Kvitnes who owned the boat with half each. Hans Koppernæs in Ålesund was the corresponding shipowner. In 1915 Koppernæs got a lease on the ship from NOK 25.000,- The last trip "Polen" was on a seal hunt from Sunnmøre in 1916. In 1917 the boat was sold to Ibestad. Some time later it was fitted with a 40 hp Bolinder. In 1944 the boat got new owners in Finnmark, and was renamed "Istind". Among other things, it was used for the evacuation of Finnmark.

  1. On November 15, 1945, the boat ended its days and sank a short distance from Hammerfest.
