First time seal hunting in the Austisen in 1950, and came home with a catch of 564 seals.

"Ungsel" was carried south by the storm. After fighting their way out of the ice, they came out into the open sea where most of their reserves of provisions and oil were washed out to sea. They then tried to get to Iceland. After a hard ride across the sea, they suffered engine damage at the entrance to Skagafjord, but they managed to get the engine started again at the last minute and got safely into port. So far they had caught 600 seals. The skipper thought this was not enough to bring home, and went back to Vesterisen when the weather cleared. They caught a few more, and had 910 seals when they decided to go home.

On the way home they set sail for Bjørnøya where they arrived on 21 May. They continued on the evening of 21 May, but just before midnight they discovered a large leak. The leak proved to be too big for their bilge pumps to handle. After a while the engine stopped. The ship was now 9 nautical miles south of Bjørnøya. Contact was made with "Brødrenes Prøve" and "Hammerfjord" which were both heading for "Ungsel". Some of the crew of "Ungsel" were sent into the boats at once, and at 01:40 on 22 May the rest of the crew also went into the boats and only minutes later "Ungsel" sank. After about an hour in the boats the crew of 13 were picked up by "Brødrenes Prøve" and "Hammerfjord" and put ashore on Bjørnøya. Here they were later picked up by the rescue boat "JM Johansen" and transported to Hammerfest.
